The emergence of autochthonous cases of hepatitis E in industrialized countries has demonstrated the importance of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in these countries and the need to better understand the transmission routes and epidemiology. The HEPeCONTROL project - Hepatitis E virus epidemiology, safety and control contributes to the increasing this knowledge that could lead to better control of this infection in Portugal.
The HEPeCONTROL Final Meeting was held on October 29, 2016, in the Great Hall of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP), with the purpose of presenting the final results of this project, which was financed by the Initiatives Program in Public Health - EEA Grants (PT06). The opening session was chaired by the Director of the FFUP Professor Dr. José Manuel Sousa Lobo and was attended by the General Director of Health Dr. Francisco George, the Advisor of the Royal Embassy of Norway Alida Endresen, the Coordinator of the National Management Unit of the EEA Grants Dr. Madalena Callé and the representative of the Initiatives in Public Health Program Operator - ACSS, Dr. Ariolda Duran. In this meeting, which was also attended by the Norwegian partners of the two institutions participating in the project (Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Norwegian University of Life Sciences), the Portuguese team presented the final results and conclusions of the HEPeCONTROL project related to its different tasks.
In addition to this Final Meeting, the HEPeCONTROL additionally held a practical workshop titled HEV - molecular biology and epidemiology devoted entirely to the molecular biology techniques used in the project for HEV RNA detection.

Program of the HEV - molecular biology and epidemiology workshop
- Real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) for the detection and quantitation of HEV RNA. qRT-PCR with probe vs SYBR Green. Analysis and interpretation of the amplification curves and the melting curves.
- Conventional RT-PCR and the obtainment of amplified products for genome sequencing. Electrophoresis and purification of the amplified products.
- Analysis and comparison of genomic sequences of HEV. Construction of phylogenetic trees.
