Scientific paper publication - Seroprevalence of Hepatitis E Virus Antibodies in Portuguese Children
During the evaluating of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) seroprevalence in the Portuguese population, the HEPeCONTROL focused on the results obtained for the representative age groups of Portuguese children, once it is a group rarely considered in seroprevalence studies.
It is with great pleasure that we have the article referring to this study published in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Journal!
In this study, it was possible to show that, in Portugal, the seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus infection is 1% in children and to verify a decline of this seroprevalence in the last decades by comparison with results obtained with a sample harvested 20 years ago.

Scientific paper publication - Prevalence of hepatitis E virus antibodies in workers occupationally exposed to swine in Portugal
One of the HEPeCONTROL project’s tasks was to assess whether in Portugal slaughterhouse workers, butchers and other workers exposed to pigs have an increased risk of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection.
It is with great pleasure that we have already the results of this task published in the Medical Microbiology and Immunology journal!
In summary, it was possible to show that professionals with occupational exposure to pigs in the North and Central Portugal are a group at risk for HEV infection, especially if they have been working for more than 16 years, showing a higher seroprevalence (30, 7%) compared to the general control population (19.9%).
